Study Notes
Use of Horn
- Horn should be used only to avoid accidents.
- On narrow mountain roads, sound horn if unable to see at least 200 feet ahead.
- Do not honk at slow drivers as they may be facing issues; it can lead to unsafe reactions.
Signaling
- Always signal before turning, stopping, or changing lanes.
- Use hand signals when vehicle signals are hard to see due to sunlight.
- Signal 3 to 4 seconds before reaching the turning point or the last 100 feet.
- Signal at least 5 seconds before changing lanes at highway speeds.
- If planning to turn beyond an intersection, signal only when entering the intersection.
Emergency Warnings
- Warn drivers behind you of an accident ahead by activating emergency flashers or tapping the brake pedal quickly.
- Use hand signals for slowing or stopping.
Driving Near Large Vehicles
- If you can't see a truck driver in their side mirror, they cannot see you.
- Maintain a 4-second following distance when behind a motorcycle.
- Never share lanes with a motorcycle, even if legal; allow a full-lane width.
Mopeds and Bicycles
- A moped cannot exceed 30 mph and can be pedaled like a bicycle.
- Allow a minimum of 3 feet of space when passing a bicycle.
SUVs and Trucks
- SUVs are large, high-speed vehicles which consume more fuel due to larger engines.
- SUVs roll over more easily than sedans during sharp turns.
- Trucks have longer stopping distances and less maneuverability.
Collision Statistics
- In front-to-front crashes, SUVs are over 4 times more deadly than cars.
- In front-to-side crashes, SUVs are over twice as deadly as cars.
- SUV-to-car collisions are 6 times more likely to kill occupants of smaller vehicles.
School Bus Regulations
- Yellow flashing lights indicate preparation for children exiting the bus.
- Red flashing lights mean you must stop at least 20 feet away; do not move until lights are off and the stop arm is retracted.
- No requirement to stop for a school bus on the opposite side of a separated roadway.
Emergency Vehicles
- Yield to police, fire, ambulance, and emergency vehicles while driving close to the right edge of the road.
- Do not follow an emergency vehicle responding to a call.
Refuse Vehicles
- When passing a refuse-collection vehicle, slow down by 10 mph below the posted limit and keep at least 2 feet distance.
- On multi-lane roads, pass in a lane not adjacent to the refuse vehicle.
Railroad Crossings
- Stop at least 15 feet from tracks when crossing signals are active.
Vehicle Warning Signs
- Diamond-shaped signs on trucks indicate a hazardous vehicle.
- Slow-moving vehicles usually display an orange triangular sign to alert drivers.
