Study Notes
Drill String
- A drill string is a critical part of the rotary drilling process, connecting the rig to the drill bit.
- It provides a fluid conduit from the rig to the bit, imparts rotary motion to the drill bit, allows weight to be set on the bit, and lowers and raises the bit in the well.
Duties of Drill String
- Provides stability to the bottom-hole assembly to minimize vibration and bit jumping.
- Allows formation fluid and pressure testing through the drill string.
- Permits through-pipe formation evaluation when logging tools cannot be run in the open hole.
Components of Drill String
Kelly
- Transmits rotary motion generated from the rotary table to the drill string via the kelly bushing.
- Has been replaced by TD systems.
Drill Pipe (DP)
- The longest section of the drill string.
- Classified according to API, with factors including length, minimum yield strength, and wear.
- Available in several sizes and weights, with aluminum drill pipe used in special projects.
DP Classification
- Length: Classified into ranges, including 18 ft – 22 ft, 27 ft – 30 ft, and 38 ft – 45 ft.
- Minimum Yield Strength: The point where the tubular goes to Plastic Deformation zone from Elastic deformation zone.
- DP Make-up Torque: The recommended amount of torque to apply when tightening drill pipe, depending on connection, inside diameter of the pin, and outside diameter of the box.
Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP)
- Reduces drilling cost by virtually eliminating drill pipe failures in the transition zone.
- Significantly increases performance and depth capabilities of small rigs in shallow drilling areas.
- Provides substantial savings in directional drilling costs by replacing the largest part of the drill-collar string, reducing downhole drilling torque, and decreasing tendencies to change direction.
