Study Notes
Dressings
- A sterile covering for wounds or injuries, used to stop bleeding, prevent infection, absorb secretions, and alleviate pain.
- Most commonly made from gauze pads.
Bandages
- Material that secures dressings and splints, controlling bleeding and keeping dressings in place without interrupting blood circulation.
Triangular Bandages
- Cloth in a triangular shape, primarily used for head and scalp injuries.
- Can create slings for immobilizing shoulders, arms, wrists, and hands.
Elastic and Roller Gauze Bandages
- Available in various widths, these bandages secure dressings and support injured areas.
- Versatile enough for application on nearly any body part.
Spiral Bandages
- Technique that involves starting at the bottom of a limb and wrapping upward.
Splints
- Rigid devices designed to support and immobilize injured body parts.
- Used for securing suspected bone or joint injuries in legs, forearms, fingers, and toes, can be combined with bandages and slings.
Slings
- Devices that immobilize an injured hand, forearm, arm, or shoulder.
- Triangular bandages can be fashioned into slings; alternatives include belts, handkerchiefs, or scarves.
- Should elevate the injured part 5-6 inches above the elbow.
Crutches
- Support devices that assist patients in ambulating when unable to put weight on an injured leg, knee, ankle, or foot.
- Patients transfer some or all weight to the crutches for movement.
Axillary Crutches
- Positioned under the armpits, with weight applied to the hands.
- The top should be 2 inches below the underarm, and handles should align comfortably with the wrist.
Forearm Crutches
- The patient’s arms go through holders, allowing weight support via the hands.
- Handle height should be slightly above the patient’s hand when arms are lowered.
Platform Crutches
- Designed for those unable to grasp handles or bear weight on hands.
- Allows weight bearing on forearms resting on a flat surface; the top should reach the patient's elbows.
