Study Notes
Nervous System Overview
- The nervous system is composed of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
- The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord
- The PNS consists of cranial nerves and spinal nerves
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
- The ANS is a subdivision of the PNS
- It has two branches: Sympathetic and Parasympathetic
Cerebrum
- The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain
- It consists of two hemispheres: left and right
- The forebrain is a part of the cerebrum and contains the lentiform nucleus
Meningeal Coverings
- The spinal cord is invested by three meningeal coverings: Dura mater, Arachnoid, and Pia mater
Functional Anatomy of the Nervous System
- Cortical high functional areas include:
- Primary motor cortex in the frontal lobe, responsible for directing voluntary movements
- Motor speech area, responsible for motor functions involved in speaking
- Primary somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobe, responsible for collecting somatic sensory information from general sensory receptors
This lecture by Dr. Omer covers important topics in medical education. By the end of this lecture, students are expected to have learned specific skills and knowledge.
