Paternal and Maternal Last Names

• Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda is Rizal's full name.
• Jose: Named after Saint Joseph ("San Jose”).
• Protasio: Named after St. Protasio, whose twin brother, Gervasius, was murdered in Milan around the mid-2nd century. They are believed to be responsible for many healing miracles.
• Rizal: “Ricial" is the source of the Spanish word Rizal. It means "green field” in English and “luntiang bukirin” in Filipino.
• Rizal: Don Francisco, Rizal's father, was friends with the Governor General. He picked the new family name Mercado in accordance with Governor General Claveria's decree (November 21, 1849).
• Mercado: From his father's last name
• From his father, Don Francisco Mercado who the child of Juan Mercado.
• Mercado: A Spanish word that means "market" in English.
• Alonso: Sourced from the mother's last name, Teodora Alonso.

• P. Jacinto was what he used to write poetry during his school days. "A La Juventud Filipina" (To the Filipino Youth) was written.

• According to Wenceslao Retana, Rizal wrote the first half of Noli Me Tangere in Madrid in 1884.
• The three-fourths section of the book was written in Paris, while the other one-fourth section was written in Germany.
• He finished the Noli in Berlin on February 21, 1887.
