Rules for Divisibility by 3

A number is divisible by 3 if:

  • The sum of its digits is divisible by 3
    • This is known as the "digit sum" or "digital root" method
    • Example: 123 is divisible by 3 because 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, which is divisible by 3
  • The number formed by its digits in reverse order is divisible by 3
    • Example: 123 is divisible by 3 because 321 is divisible by 3

Examples

  • 12 is divisible by 3 because 1 + 2 = 3
  • 15 is divisible by 3 because 1 + 5 = 6, which is divisible by 3
  • 36 is divisible by 3 because 3 + 6 = 9, which is divisible by 3

Note

  • These rules can be applied to whole numbers only
  • These rules are not foolproof and may not work for all numbers. However, they provide a quick and efficient way to check for divisibility by 3 in most cases.
