History is a branch of knowledge that deals with all things (including thoughts, sayings and deeds) that have been done by people who lived in the past. In another sense, history is an organized and critical study of the past based on interpretation of evidences.

The study of history covers the period called pre-history as well. This was the period before the beginning of the technique of writing about 4000 B.C.

The term history itself comes from the Greek word 'historia', meaning inquiry or knowledge acquired by investigation.
