Culture and Society: Understanding the Components and Types

• Culture is the historically created design for living that exists as a potential guide for human behavior.

• Culture has three major components: the technological, sociological, and ideological.

• The technological component is concerned with the creation of tools, materials, techniques, and machinery.

• The sociological aspect relates to the rules or norms which govern behavior and outlines the expected mode of relationship in social life.

• The ideological component encompasses a varied and complex array of social phenomena that inform the perception of man about himself and the world.

• Culture is acquired through socialization, which guarantees the transmission of culture to every individual born into a society through learning and sharing.

• Society refers to any kind of relationship entered into by man and can be formed without a boundary or assignable limits.

• Sociologists have come up with two types of societies: communal and associational.

• A communal society is small, with a simple division of labor and has a limited differentiation of roles.

• An associational society is exemplified by the modern metropolis, with a marked division of labor and a proliferation of social roles.

• Culture is dynamic, changing continuously, shedding some features and acquiring new ones.
