China evolved from a monarchy in Imperial China to the Republic of China with the nationalist group led by Sun Yat-Sen, and eventually to the communist Peoples Republic of China led by Mao Tsetung.

The major events and policies during Maoist China included the establishment of the Peoples Republic of China, the Hundred Flowers Campaign, the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution.

The post-Mao developments in China included the death of Mao Tsetung, economic reforms under Deng Xiaoping, the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and the rise of Xi Jinping as a global economic and political power.
