Study Notes
Self-determination theory posits that people are motivated to internalize the regulation of uninteresting but important activities, and there are two processes of internalization: introjection and integration. The social context influences the internalization process and regulatory style. Autonomy support is important in promoting internalization and self-determination. Three facilitating factors that promote internalization and integration are providing a meaningful rationale, acknowledging the behaver's perspective, and conveying choice rather than control. The absence of these factors represents nonsupport for self-determination. When internalization occurs in contexts that support self-determination, the regulations will be integrated, and when internalization occurs in contexts that do not support self-determination, the regulations will be introjected. Supporting self-determination promotes greater internalization, whereas controlling contexts promote less internalization. Self-determined regulation is associated with more positive attributes than controlling regulation.
