Introduction to Ayurveda: The Science of Life
- Ayurveda is the oldest healing science that originated in India over 5,000 years ago.
- Ayurveda means “The Science of Life” and is often referred to as the “Mother of All Healing.”
- The principles of many natural healing systems in the West have their roots in Ayurveda.
- Ayurveda emphasizes prevention and encourages maintaining health through balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle, and herbal remedies.
- Each person has a unique constitution that comprises a particular pattern of energy, which remains the same throughout their life.
- Internal and external factors can disturb this balance and cause disease or disorder.
- Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles: vata, pitta, and kapha.
- These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body, where vata is the energy of movement, pitta is the energy of digestion, and kapha is the energy of structure and lubrication.
- All people have the qualities of vata, pitta, and kapha, but one is usually primary, one secondary, and the third least prominent.
- Disease in Ayurveda is caused by an excess or deficiency of vata, pitta, or kapha, or the presence of toxins.
- Body, mind, and consciousness work together in maintaining balance, and they are viewed as different facets of one’s being.
- Ayurveda believes that the entire cosmos is an interplay of the energies of the five great elements: Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth, and vata, pitta, and kapha are combinations and permutations of these elements.
