Study Notes
Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP)
- A DRP is essential to avoid serious omissions or duplication of effort during implementation, and to clearly define task responsibilities and communicate them to personnel involved.
Disaster Recovery Team
- A disaster recovery team should be composed of experts in their areas with assigned tasks, and team members should delegate subtasks to their subordinates following a disaster.
- The team structure should include a DRP Team Coordinator, Second-Site Facilities Group, Program and Data Backup Group, Data Conversion and Data Control Group, and other relevant teams.
Objectives of DRP
- The objectives of DRP include preparing a backup site for operation, acquiring hardware from vendors, and reestablishing data conversion and data control functions necessary to process business transactions.
Types of Disasters
- Disasters can be classified into two types: natural disasters (e.g., fire, flood, tornado) and human-made disasters (e.g., sabotage, error, power outages, system failure, drive failure, O/S crash/lock).
Essential Elements of an Effective DRP
- Four common features of an effective DRP include identifying critical applications, creating a disaster recovery team, providing site backup, and specifying backup and off-site storage procedures.
Identifying Critical Applications
- The first essential element of a DRP is to identify the firm's critical applications and associated data files, which are critical to the short-term survival of the organization.
- Recovery efforts should focus on restoring critical applications that generate cash flows sufficient to satisfy short-term obligations.
