Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction (DRRR) Finals Reviewer
- El Niño is a large-scale ocean-atmosphere climate interaction characterized by a periodic warming of sea surface temperatures across the central and east-central Equatorial Pacific.
- El Niña is characterized by periods of below-average sea surface temperatures across the east-central Equatorial Pacific.
- Storm surge is an abnormal sea level rise during tropical cyclones ("bagyo"). It's caused by strong winds and low atmospheric pressures within tropical cyclones.
- Thunderstorm is a localized storm cloud that produces lightning and thunder, often bringing heavy rain and strong gusty winds.
- Flood is the overflow of water onto normally dry land in existing waterways, like rivers, streams, or ditches.
- Landslides are downward ground movements on sloping terrain, caused by gravity. A scientific term for this is "landslip".
- Sinkholes form when the surface layer of soil collapses. They are an ideal environment within saturated limestones, salt beds and sedimentary deposits, but not within volcanic craters.
- Liquefaction is a secondary hazard caused by an earthquake where water-saturated fill or unconsolidated soil causes building collapse.
- Tsunamis are large waves in a body of water, generally caused by underwater earthquakes, and are not a secondary hazard caused by an earthquake.
- Volcanic gases are the collective term for gases given off by an active volcano.
- Ballistic projectile is the term for rocks directly ejected from a volcano's vent with force and trajectory.
- Lava flow describes the streams of molten rock that pour or ooze from a volcano's erupting vent.
- Pyroclastic flow is a high-density mix of hot lava blocks, pumice, ash and volcanic gas.
- Ash fall is composed of fragments of pulverized rocks, minerals, and volcanic gas created during volcanic eruptions.
- Earthquake safety while inside a building requires ducking, covering, and holding on; running outside immediately or going to an open space is less effective.
- Ground shaking is a primary hazard caused by an earthquake. Other primary causes are motion along fault lines and tectonic plate movement.
- Causes of Earthquakes include the movement of tectonic plates, motion along Earth's faults, and shifting of bedrocks. Factors, like changing soil density (subsidence), are not primary causes.
- Proper Function of Smoke Alarms requires working properly, having working batteries, and testing monthly.
- Power strip electrical cord replacement criteria include cracked, frayed, and discolored cords. Replacing your power strip by having used every outlet is not a reason.
- Firefighting Equipment Signs use white pictograms on a red background.
- Warning Signs have a triangular shape.
- Fire Triangle consists of oxygen, heat, and fuel (flammable material).
- Extinguishing Class A Fires use agents like water, dry powder, and foam, but Carbon Dioxide is NOT effective.
