Direct Object Pronouns in Spanish
- Direct object pronouns (D.O.P.s) replace the noun that receives the action of a verb. They show who or what is directly affected by the action.
- These pronouns are essential for avoiding repetition and for natural-sounding Spanish.
Forms of Direct Object Pronouns
- me (me): used for the subject "yo" (I)
- te (you): used for the subject "tú" (you) and "usted" (you-formal)
- lo (him/it): used for the subject "él" (he) and "ello" (it) masculine
- la (her/it): used for the subject "ella" (she) and "ello" (it) feminine
- nos (us): used for the subject "nosotros/nosotras" (we)
- os (you): used for the subject "vosotros/vosotras" (you-plural informal)
- los (them): used for the subject "ellos" (they-masculine)
- las (them): used for the subject "ellas" (they-feminine)
Placement of Direct Object Pronouns
- Before the conjugated verb: When the conjugated verb is in the present tense.
- Example: Yo lo veo. (I see him/it)
- Before the infinitive verb: Before infinitive verbs.
- Example: Quiero te ayudar. (I want to help you)
- Between the auxiliary and the participle: With the present perfect and other compound tenses, the pronoun goes between the auxiliary verb and the participle.
- Example: Hemos lo visto. (We have seen it)
- Between the conjugated verb and any adverbs that come after the verb: Even if the verb is not in the present tense.
- Example: Ella la buscaba rápidamente. (She was quickly searching for her.)
Common Errors and Trouble Spots
-
Confusing with indirect object pronouns: Direct object pronouns receive the action directly, while indirect object pronouns receive the benefit or consequence of an action. Note the difference in meaning and placement.
-
Word order with prepositions: The pronoun takes its place relative to the verb, not the preposition.
- Example: *DÃme lo. (Tell me it.)
- Example: Te lo doy. (I give it to you.)
- Example: Le doy lo. (I give it to him/her.)
-
Verbs transitive and intransitive: Direct object pronouns are used only with verbs that take direct objects.
Practice Examples
- Yo lo veo. (I see him/it)
- Tú la quieres. (You want her/it)
- Ella nos habla. (She talks to us)
- Pedro las lleva. (Pedro takes them)
- Nosotros los compramos. (We bought them)
- Ellos me ayudan. (They help me)
- ¿Quieres te ayudar?(Do you want me to help you?)
- Yo lo vi el viernes pasado. (I saw him/it last Friday)
