What is a Diode?
What is a Diode?
A diode is an electronic component that allows current to flow in only one direction. It acts like a one-way gate for electrons, controlling the flow of electricity.
What is Forward Bias?
What is Forward Bias?
The diode is forward biased when the positive terminal of the voltage source is connected to the anode and the negative terminal to the cathode. This allows current to flow through the diode, resulting in a decreasing resistance and allowing current to flow.
What is Reverse Bias?
What is Reverse Bias?
In reverse bias, the positive terminal of the voltage source is connected to the cathode and the negative terminal to the anode. This configuration prevents significant current flow through the diode, as virtually no current flows through the diode, acting as a closed switch.

Study Notes
Diode Definition and Function
- A diode is an electronic component that allows current to flow in one direction.
- It acts like a one-way valve for electrons.
- Diodes are used in various electronic circuits for specific purposes.
Semiconductor Diode Construction
- Diodes consist of a P-type and N-type semiconductor material joined together.
- One side is the anode (P-type), the other is the cathode (N-type).
- A depletion region forms at the junction where the P- and N-type materials meet.
Diode Characteristics
- The diode's characteristic curve shows how current changes with voltage.
- There are regions representing no bias, reverse bias, and forward bias.
- In forward bias, current easily flows, whereas in reverse bias, current is very limited.
Forward and Reverse Bias
- Forward bias: applied voltage polarities are such that the P-side is positive and the N-side is negative.
- Reverse bias: applied voltage polarities are such that the P-side is negative and the N-side is positive.
Diode Circuit Analysis (Q4-Q8)
- Q4: No bias
- Q5: Reverse bias.
- Q6: No bias.
- Q7: Forward bias.
- Q8: Forward bias.
Rectifier Circuits (Q9-Q10)
- Rectifiers convert AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current).
- Q9 and Q10 show different rectifier circuit diagrams, including graphs depicting how input voltage and output voltage change in time.
- Various rectifier circuits and their characteristics are presented.
