    Study Notes

    Digital Systems

    • Consists of hardware and software.
    • Stores, processes, and transmits data in a digital format.

    Hardware

    • Any physical part of a digital system that can be touched, picked up, or moved.
    • Includes circuit boards, memory chips, and electronic wiring.
    • Examples include monitors, keyboards, hard drives, mouses, and CPUs.

    Software

    • Instructions used to manipulate data or to request other hardware components to perform a task.
    • Software instructions are read by a CPU, which then sends electrical signals to the hardware to perform the task.
    • Examples include word processors, spreadsheets, operating systems, anti-virus software, film editing software, and presentation software.

    Binary

    • All digital devices use the binary number system.
    • The binary number system consists of two digits: 0 and 1.
    • Electronic circuits in hardware consist of transistors, which are turned on for a signal of 1 and off for a signal of 0.

    File Sizes

    • Data is stored in files, and the file size represents the number of bits stored in the file.
    • A single 1 or 0 is known as a bit (b).
    • A collection of 8 bits is known as a byte (B).
    • Most characters need one byte of storage.
    • File sizes are often represented using kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes:
      • 1024 bytes = 1 Kilobyte (kB)
      • 1024 kilobytes = 1 Megabyte (MB)
      • 1024 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte (GB)
    • The larger the file size, the more bits (0s and 1s) are used to represent the data in the file.

    Hardware - Input & Output

    • Any physical part of a digital system that can be touched, picked up, or moved.
    • Hardware devices contain circuit boards, memory chips, and electronic wiring.
    • Electronic signals (software instructions) are sent through the wiring to instruct the hardware to perform a task.
    • Hardware can be grouped into input devices, output devices, and system unit devices.

    Input Devices

    • Send data to a computer.
    • Allow users to interact with and control the computer.
    • Convert human-understandable data and instructions into binary signals that are understood by the computer.
    • Examples include microphones, mouses, keyboards, webcams, and joysticks.

    Output Devices

    • Act as the interface between humans and computers.
    • Receive data from the CPU and convert it into human-understandable information.
    • Can be in the form of text, images, music, voice messages, etc.
    • Examples include monitors, projectors, headphones, and speakers.
