Study Notes
- A digital (finger) rectal examination is performed to identify issues with organs or other structures in the pelvis and lower belly.
Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) in Men
- Checks for growths or enlargement of the prostate gland.
- Prostate tumors can often be felt as hard lumps, this can be a component of a routine exam or to investigate symptoms like urination changes.
- Not all prostate issues are detectable through a rectal exam.
Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) in Women
- Checks for problems in a woman's reproductive organs, such as the uterus and ovaries.
- Often conducted during routine pelvic exams and Pap tests.
- Used to investigate symptoms like pelvic pain or vaginal bleeding.
General Uses for Digital Rectal Exams
- Helps identify causes of symptoms like rectal bleeding, belly or pelvic pain, changes in urination, or bowel habits.
- Stool samples can be collected to test for blood.
- Checks for hemorrhoids or growths, including cancer, in the rectum.
- A DRE alone cannot diagnose colorectal cancer and it may not find internal hemorrhoids because they are often soft.
- A sigmoidoscopy may be necessary for diagnosing internal hemorrhoids.
How the Test Is Performed
- During the examination, a doctor gently inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum, using the other hand to apply pressure on the lower belly or pelvic area.
Patient Positioning During the Test
- Men are often examined while standing and bending forward at the waist or lying on their left side with knees bent towards the chest.
- Women are often examined while lying on their back on an examination table with their feet raised and supported by stirrups, a "rectovaginal" exam is often performed.
Interpreting Test Results
- Normal results indicate no felt organ enlargements or growths.
- Abnormal results indicate felt organ enlargements or growths.
- In men, an enlarged prostate may suggest benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) or prostatitis, and tumors may be detected.
- In women, growths on the cervix, uterus, or ovaries may be detected.
- Other findings may include hemorrhoids, polyps, tumors, abscesses in the lower rectum, anal fissures, or bladder problems.
