Study Notes
Histology of the Digestive System
- The histology of the digestive system can be divided into three sections: Folds of the Epithelium, Histology of the Submucosa, and Histology of the Muscularis.
Folds of the Epithelium
- The esophagus has no folds of the epithelium.
- The stomach has rugae and gastric pits.
- The small intestine has plicae circulares, villi, crypts of Lieberkuhn, and microvilli.
- The large intestine has haustra and intestinal glands.
Histology of the Submucosa
- The esophagus has submucosal mucous glands.
- The stomach has no specialized structures in the submucosa.
- The duodenum has Brunner's glands.
- The ileum has Peyer's Patches.
- The large intestine has no specialized structures in the submucosa.
Histology of the Muscularis
- The esophagus has two smooth muscle layers: circular and longitudinal.
- The stomach has three smooth muscle layers: oblique, circular, and longitudinal.
- The small intestine has two smooth muscle layers: circular and longitudinal.
- The large intestine has two smooth muscle layers: circular and longitudinal.
Stomach (Pyloric Region)
- Mucosa consists of pyloric glands in the lamina propria and deeper gastric pits that extend half the thickness of the mucosa
- Muscularis Externa is composed of an inner circular layer (thickened to form the pyloric sphincter) and an outer longitudinal layer
- Submucosa and Serosa are similar in structure to the fundic part of the stomach
Pyloric Glands
- Located in the duodenum
- Responsible for producing mucous to aid in food passage through the digestive system
- Found in the pyloric region of the stomach
- Responsible for the production of mucous in the stomach
