Divisions of the Alimentary Canal

  • Foregut extends from the oral cavity to the superior part of the duodenum, including the oesophagus and stomach.
  • Midgut starts from the middle part of the duodenum and extends to the right 2/3 of the transverse colon, comprising the jejunum, ileum, caecum, ascending colon, and 2/3 of the transverse colon.
  • Hindgut begins from the left 1/3 of the transverse colon and includes the sigmoid colon, descending colon, rectum, and anal canal.

Components of the Digestive System

  • Liver, pancreas, small intestine, and stomach are interconnected through the flow of digestive juices and coordination of digestive processes.
  • Each component has specific functions, but together they form a complex system that ensures efficient digestion.

Test your knowledge on the anatomy of the digestive system, focusing on the divisions of foregut, midgut, and hindgut. Identify the structures and organs that belong to each division.
