Study Notes
Formed Elements of Blood
- Consist of cells (Erythrocytes & Leukocytes) and cell fragments (Thrombocytes)
- Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells) are the most common of the formed elements
- Thrombocytes (Platelets) are cell fragments
- Leukocytes (White Blood Cells) are the least common of the formed elements
Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells)
- Function: to carry oxygen throughout the body
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
- Function: to form blood clots and stop bleeding
Leukocytes (White Blood Cells)
- Types: Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes
- Abundance: Neutrophils (55-70%), Lymphocytes (20-40%), Monocytes (2-8%), Eosinophils (1-3%), Basophils (0.5-1%)
- Function: to fight infection and disease
Neutrophils
- Large cells with lavender color and visible granules
- Multi-lobed, segmented nucleus
- Phagocytic cells that engulf and digest foreign particles and bacteria
Monocytes
- Can transform into Macrophages, which are also phagocytic cells
- Function: to fight infection and disease
Lymphocytes
- Contribute to specific host defenses
