Study Notes
Development of Writing
- Writing is a relatively recent development.
- Early precursors include cave drawings (at least 20,000 years ago) and clay tokens (10,000 years ago).
- The earliest known writing dates back 5,000 years, with cuneiform on clay tablets.
Types of Writing Systems
- Pictograms: Picture-writing. Symbols represent objects. A relationship between the symbol and its meaning needs to be established.
- Ideograms: Ideographic writing describes concepts and ideas. They are often abstract and derived from existing forms. Example: symbol for sun could stand for heat or light.
- Mathematical symbols and numerals (e.g., 1, 2) are ideograms.
- Ideograms are separate from language, meaning they don't represent specific words in any language.
- Logograms: Logographic writing represents words. Each symbol represents a whole word, and the link between the form and meaning is arbitrary.
- Sumerian cuneiform (from southern Iraq) is an example.
- Pictograms and ideograms could be developed into logograms.
- Modern Chinese writing often uses logograms.
- Rebus Writing: A symbol representing one thing represents the sound of that thing in a word. So if a symbol (e.g., for sun) represents the sound of "sun" it could be used in other words that share that sound. This drastically increases the number of symbols available, but in fewer than a purely logographic form.
- Syllabic Writing: Each symbol represents a syllable. Modern Japanese writing system uses this method. No purely syllabic systems exist nowadays.
- Alphabetic Writing: Each symbol represents a sound unit (phoneme).
- The Phoenician alphabet is a source for many other alphabets. Early alphabets omitted vowels.
- The Greek alphabet included symbols for vowels, an advancement.
- The Roman alphabet is the foundation for English and many European languages.
Cuneiform
- Cuneiform is wedge-shaped writing.
- Sumerians used it.
- Created by pressing a wedge-shaped implement into soft clay tablets.
Other Developments
- Chinese writing systems are significantly based on logograms
- Modern English (written) spelling is relatively recent, influenced by printing, Latin, and French.
