Design Process
- 5 Phases: Ideation, Concept, Development, Production, Exhibition.
- Ideation Phase: Understanding the brief (requirements, timing, materials, etc.), researching existing examples, inspiration, and possible solutions, creating mind maps and research documents.
- Concept Phase: Creating concept sketches (many rough ideas), mood boards to explore mood/style/look of the design.
- Development Phase: Developing the idea for production, researching and exploring functionality, materials, and techniques, exploring ergonomics (how the end-user will interact with the design, considering safety and comfort), exploring visual aesthetics (how the design will look), creating technical drawings with specifications for production.
- Production Phase: Producing the design, planning the steps to make the design, considering budget, timing, materials, and tools, documenting the production and solving any issues which arise during the process.
- Exhibition Phase: Exhibiting the design to end-users, utilizing advertising, marketing, online sales (website), promotion, social media, branding, packaging, and delivery.
Design Process Terms
- Linear Process: A basic, step-by-step process where each phase occurs sequentially.
- Cyclic Process: A process designed to repeat itself in a cycle (circular form). Recycled and repurposed products are examples.
- Human-Centered Process: A process focused on the end-user (target market). Feedback loops are important in this process.
- Prototype: A working model of the design, often utilizing simulations. Produced during the development phase.
- Materials: Materials required for the design process.
- Maquette: A small-scale version of a design that visualizes the form.
- Mock Up: A rough version of the design, often used for visual communication, like packaging design.
- Ergonomics: The relationship between the design and the user considering safety, functionality, and comfort. Includes both physical interaction with the product and the user's perception of the design.
