Study Notes
- Design elements include line, colour, form, shape, space, and texture.
Line
- The basic element of design.
- Lines can be curved or straight and follow different directions.
- Lines create optical illusions by drawing the eye towards or away from something.
Horizontal Lines
- Make things seem wider.
- Creates a sense of calmness, relaxation, and informality.
Vertical Lines
- Creates the illusion of height.
- Makes an impression of formality, dignity, masculinity, and strength.
Diagonal Lines
- Widens or lengthens depending on slant.
- Creates a dynamic and dramatic feel.
- Creates feeling of movement and action.
Curved Lines
- Round and continuous.
- Gives a sense of security and fun.
Shape and Form
- Form has three dimensions, including height, width, and depth.
- Shape is two-dimensional.
- Silhouette against the background, or outside lines of the design.
Texture
- The surface quality of an object.
- Texture is visual and tactile.
- Texture Reflects light in many ways.
Smooth texture
- Sophisticated, feminine, and formal.
- Texture reflects light and catches the eye.
Rough texture
- Informal and masculine.
- Absorbs light, making the object less noticeable.
Design Principles
- Design principles are guidelines used to create good design and include proportion, balance, rhythm, harmony, and emphasis.
Balance
- Achieved when objects are grouped around an imaginary central point or line, resulting in equal attraction on each side.
Formal/Symmetrical Balance
- The same on either side equidistant from the central point.
- Mirror image.
Informal/Asymmetrical Balance
- Design sides differ but still attract equal attraction.
- The larger object is always placed closer to the central point.
Radial Balance
- Arranging design elements of a design around a central point in the shape of a circle.
Proportion
- The pleasing relationship between multiple areas with different parts with respect to size, shape, weights and positions.
- Indicating a comparison between parts.
- The ideal proportion is the ratio of 2:3; other ratios are 3:5, 5:8, and 8:13.
- Grouping images needs less space between objects than their own size.
Rhythm
- Illusion of movement, guiding the eye from one design element to another.
- Repetition involves using lines, shapes/forms, textures, or colors repeatedly.
- Progression and grading involves gradual changes in size, line, color, texture, or pattern.
- Alternation involves repeated colors, shapes, or sizes.
- Continuous lines describes how one design element dominates the design.
Harmony
- Achieved when all elements of the design are put together to create unity.
- Harmony of color occurs when there is not too much color or bright colours.
- Harmony of form, shape, and size occurs when all items are relation to one another and the whole design.
- Harmony of line occurs when not too many styles of lines are used.
- Harmony of texture occurs when compatible textures are used.
Emphasis
- Emphasis is drawing the eye to a specific point in a design.
- The central point is called the focal point.
- Emphasis can be manipulated by focusing on the best aspect of the design or guiding the eye away from the negative aspects.
- Emphasis is achieved when an object is placed on a large, simple background.
- Emphasis can be created via unique or large shapes or designs.
- Emphasis can be achieved by using Bright/contrasting colors or Focused/spot lighting.
- Grouping of designs, and Positioning designs in prominent places contributes to emphasis.
