Understanding Tools
- It's crucial to understand tools and their functions in design and technology (DT)
- Using the wrong tool can damage your work or cause injury
- Tools can be categorized by their function: measuring and marking, cutting, shaping and braiding, drilling, hitting, and fixing
Measuring and Marking Tools
- Tri-square: Creates 90-degree lines to an edge, be careful of sharp corners
- Marking gauge: Creates a parallel line along an edge; the pin is sharp, so handle with care
- Steel rule: Used for measuring and setting the marking gauge, be careful of sharp edges
Cutting Tools
- Tenon saw: Cuts straight lines in wood, handles with care due to sharp teeth
- Bevel edge chisel: Removes waste material difficult for a saw to reach, like mortise joints and recesses
- Coping saw: Cuts curved lines with a thin blade
Shaping and Braiding Tools
- Glass paper (sandpaper): Removes small amounts of material for smoothness. Use in a well-ventilated area with extraction to remove dust
- File: Removes waste material on the end or inside of wood, be careful of shattering if hit together or used for levering
- Smoothing plane: Shaves off wood along the grain, be careful of the sharp blade
Drilling Tools
- Hand drill: Used for drilling holes, be mindful of loose hair or skin around the rotating handle
- Brad awl: Used for marking holes or creating pilot holes for screws, sharp point requires caution
- Center punch: Marks the center of a hole for drilling, use with a hammer, keep fingers out of the way
Hitting Tools
- Mallet: Strikes chisels and wooden fixtures, check the handle-head connection for looseness
- Claw hammer: Strikes nails and can be used to remove them
- Ball peen hammer: Used to push fixings below the surface or shape metal
Fixing Tools
- Various tools used for fixing are not specified in this text
