Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)
- CUI encompasses information types such as For Official Use Only (FOUO), Sensitive but Unclassified (SBU), and DEA Sensitive Information (DSEN).

Markings Requirements
- Different marking protocols exist for FOUO, SBU, and DSEN.
For Official Use Only (FOUO)
- FOUO materials must be marked "FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY" on various parts including the front cover, title page, first page, back cover, and any internal page containing FOUO information.
Other FOUO Materials
- Non-paper materials (slides, digital media, etc.) require appropriate markings to indicate the presence of FOUO content.
Sensitive but Unclassified (SBU)
- Access criteria for SBU in the Department of Defense mirror those of FOUO, except for "SBU NOFORN" marked information, which is restricted from non-U.S. citizens without Department of State approval.
DEA Sensitive Information (DSEN)
- DSEN pertains to unclassified information from the DEA that needs protection against unauthorized disclosure to safeguard investigative methods and sources.
- Designation of DSEN is reserved for the DEA Administrator and authorized personnel, and protective measures are mandated for the DoD.
Types of DSEN Information
- DSEN includes investigative information, legally restricted information, critical operational materials, and information that violates privileged relationships if disclosed.
DSEN Markings for Unclassified Documents
- Unclassified documents with DEA Sensitive information must be marked "DEA SENSITIVE" on the top and bottom of covers and pages containing such information.
DSEN Markings for Classified Documents
- Classified documents must follow Volume 2 manual instructions. Specific markings include “UNCLASSIFIED// DEA SENSITIVE” for pages with DSEN but no classified content.
Access to DSEN
- Only individuals with a valid need-to-know may access DSEN; no security clearance is required. Sharing DEA Sensitive information outside the DoD without DEA approval is prohibited.
Transmission of DEA Sensitive Material
- Within CONUS, DEA Sensitive material can be sent via first-class mail. Outside CONUS, it must be sent with Secret material protocols, avoiding non-government delivery services.
Electronic Transmission of DEA Sensitive Information
- Secure communication circuits are preferred for transmitting DEA Sensitive information within and outside the continental United States.
Reproduction of DEA Sensitive Information
- Reproduction of DSEN material is restricted to necessity for operational purposes.
