Flashcards
Periodontium
Periodontium
The periodontium is the supporting structures of teeth, including gums, periodontal ligaments, cementum, and alveolar bone.
Gingiva
Gingiva
The soft tissue that covers the jawbone, also known as the gums.
Periodontal Ligaments
Periodontal Ligaments
Fibrous tissues connecting the tooth to the jawbone.

Study Notes
Dental Terminology
- Dental terminology is used in various dental clinical specialties
- Dr. Mohamed Riad, lecturer in endodontics, presented at BADR University in Assiut
Nine Clinical Specialties
- Oral Medicine & Periodontology
- Removable Prosthodontics
- Conservative Dentistry
- Endodontics
- Fixed Prosthodontics
- Orthodontics
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
- Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
Oral Medicine & Periodontology
- Periodontics addresses conditions affecting tooth supporting structures (soft tissue, bone)
- Oral Medicine diagnoses and manages conditions affecting all oral soft tissues
- The periodontium is an attachment apparatus composed of four major tissues: gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone
Periodontium Components
- Gingiva: soft tissue covering the jawbone (gums)
- Periodontal ligaments: bundles of fibers supporting and retaining teeth
- Cementum: hard, rough outer surface of tooth root enabling fiber attachment for retention
- Alveolar bone process: compact bone forming the tooth socket
Periodontal Diseases
- Gingivitis: gum inflammation without supporting tissue loss
- Periodontitis: inflammation involving tooth supporting structures (gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone)
Plaque
- Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria constantly forming on teeth
- Biofilm (plaque): covers teeth, and can cause inflammation
Calculus
- Calculus: mineralized plaque deposit on tooth crown and/or root. Can be slight, moderate-heavy, or severe
Periodontal Probing Depth
- Periodontal probing depth: charting probe depths, assessing plaque and calculus presence, and implant conditions
- Depth of probing measured from gum to bone
- 3mm in healthy gums; 5mm in diseased gums
Scaling
- Scaling: calculus removal from tooth surfaces and beneath gingiva
Removable Prosthodontics
- Removable prosthodontics replaces teeth using removable dentures
- Edentulism: loss of dentition due to disease, trauma, or oral cancer
- Complete edentulism: loss of all teeth
- Complete denture: a removable replacement for entire dental arch teeth and soft tissue
- Partial edentulism: partial loss of teeth
- Partial denture: a partial removable replacement for teeth and soft tissue in a dental arch
Impression Trays
- Impression trays carry, contain, and control impression material
- They hold material for forming a negative copy
