Study Notes
Dental Terminology and Specialties
- Dental terminology covers common terms in various dental specialties.
- The presenter, Dr. Mohamed Riad, is a lecturer in endodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry, Badr University in Assiut.
Nine Dental Clinical Specialties
- Oral Medicine & Periodontology
- Fixed Prosthodontics
- Orthodontics
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Removable Prosthodontics
- Conservative Dentistry
- Endodontics
- Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
- Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
Oral Medicine & Periodontology
- Periodontics deals with conditions affecting tooth supporting structures (soft tissue & bone).
- Oral Medicine focuses on diagnosing and managing conditions affecting all oral soft tissues.
- The periodontium is an attachment apparatus, composed of four major tissues.
Components of Periodontium
- Gingiva: soft tissue covering the jawbone (gums)
- Cementum: hard, rough outer surface covering tooth roots, enabling fiber attachment for retention.
- Periodontal Ligament: bundles of fibers supporting and retaining teeth in sockets.
- Alveolar Bone: compact bone forming tooth sockets.
- Periodontium includes gingiva, cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone.
Periodontal Diseases
- Gingivitis: inflammation of gingival tissue without supporting tissue loss.
- Periodontitis: inflammation of supporting structures (gingiva, periodontal ligament, alveolar bone). Periodontitis involves loss of bone support for teeth.
Stages of Periodontal Disease
- Normal gum tissues
- Gingivitis: inflammed gums
- Periodontitis: inflammation with supportive tissue loss
Plaque and Calculus
- Plaque: sticky film of bacteria constantly forming on teeth.
- Calculus: hard, mineralized deposit of plaque on tooth surfaces (crown and/or root).
Periodontal Probing Depth
- Charting & recording probe depths.
- Assesses plaque and calculus presence, soft tissue, & implant conditions.
Scaling
- Scaling removes calculus deposits from tooth surfaces and beneath the gingiva.
Removable Prosthodontics
- Focuses on replacing teeth with removable prostheses (dentures).
- Edentulism: defined as loss of teeth (dentition), due to disease (caries, periodontal), trauma, oral cancer.
- Complete edentulism: complete loss of all teeth
- Partial edentulism: partial loss of teeth
- Complete dentures: removable replacement for teeth and soft tissue in a full dental arch.
- Partial dentures: removable in a partial arch.
- Impression trays: devices to contain, carry and control material during impressions.
