Study Notes
Novel Methods for Caries Detection
- Digital Imaging is an image composed of a series of sensors and pixels distributed orderly, with several advantages over conventional radiography, including: • 60-90% lower radiation dose • Larger image receptor • Immediate image availability • Electronic transferability • Adjustable magnification, contrast, and brightness • No need for processing solutions, reducing environmental impact and costs
Fiber Optic Transillumination (FOT)
- FOT is based on the difference in light transmission between decayed and sound tooth structures • Sound enamel is formed of densely packed hydroxyapatite crystals • Demineralization disrupts this structure, scattering photons and causing an optical disruption • FOT involves placing a light source at one end of the tooth, and observing the transmission of light to detect caries
Digital Fiber Optic Transillumination Imaging
- This method combines FOT with a digital camera to reduce shortcomings • Uses 780 nm wavelength near infrared radiation instead of white light • Non-invasive and doesn't use ionizing radiation • More sensitive than X-rays in detecting early demineralizations • Images can be saved and viewed later, with properties of lesions examined by increasing contrast
Subtraction Radiography
- This technique is used for detection of caries and assessment of bone loss in periodontology • Digitalization is done by taking a picture of the radiograph with a high-quality video camera • Image is transferred to a computer imaging device (digitizer) • Two standardized radiographs are superimposed using software, resulting in dark and bright areas
Mini-Device (Mini-D)
- This device is based on the fiber optic principle, easy to use, and requires no calibration • Emits and analyzes light reflected from the tooth surface, converting it to electrical signals • Presence of caries is identified by two signals; sound and light (green light turns to red) • Effective in wet environment, but plaque must be removed before examination
Fluorescence
- Two methods have been developed based on the fluorescence of organic components of teeth: • Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence (QLF) • DIAGNOdent, which uses infrared light and has a 655 nm wavelength • DIAGNOdent system has a range of 0 to 99, with 0 indicating the healthiest state and 99 indicating mostly caries
