Study Notes
Introduction and Nomenclature
- Dental anatomy studies the structure, morphology, development and classification of teeth, as well as their function in occlusion.
- The dental arch refers to the part of the oral cavity where teeth are arranged.
- A cross is drawn on the dental arch to simplify tooth identification – the horizontal line divides the arches into the upper and lower arches.
- The vertical line divides the face and dental arches into right and left segments, each called a quadrant.
-
Types and Forms of Teeth:
-
Anterior:
- Incisors - Four in each arch, used for cutting and incising food.
- Canines (Cuspids) - Two in each arch, used for tearing food.
-
Posterior:
- Premolars (Bicuspids) - Six in each arch, used for tearing and grinding food.
- Molars - Four in each arch, used for grinding food.
-
Anterior:
Types of Dentitions
-
Deciduous Dentition: (6 months - 6 years)
- Primary or temporary teeth
- 20 teeth in oral cavity, 10 in each arch, 5 in each quadrant
- Dental formula: I 2/2 C 1/1 M 2/2
-
Mixed Dentition: (6 years - 12 years)
- Both deciduous and permanent teeth.
- Transitional phase
- Starts with the eruption of the first permanent molar and continues until all deciduous teeth are replaced.
-
Permanent Dentition: (12 years - whole life)
- 32 teeth in oral cavity, 16 in each arch, 8 in each quadrant
- Dental formula: I 2/2 C 1/1 P 2/2 M 3/3
- Permanent molars are not preceded by deciduous teeth and are therefore called non-succedaneous teeth.
Numbering and Coding Systems of Teeth
-
Palmer Notation System:
- Uses a quadrant representation facing the patient.
- Permanent teeth are numbered 1-8 on each side from the midline.
- Deciduous teeth are lettered A-E on each side from the midline.
-
Federation Dentaire International (FDI) System (Two Digit System):
- Uses a two-digit code:
- First digit: Represents the quadrant (1 - 4 for permanent dentition, 5 - 8 for deciduous dentition).
- Second digit: Represents the tooth number according to Palmer notation.
- Uses a two-digit code:
-
Universal Numbering System:
- Numbers are always preceded by the sign # to indicate the universal system is being used.
- Permanent teeth are numbered 1-32.
- Deciduous teeth are numbered 1-20 or lettered A-T.
Functions of Teeth
-
Mastication:
- Cutting food into smaller pieces for easier swallowing.
-
Appearance and Aesthetics:
- Contributes to facial beauty and smile aesthetics.
-
Speech:
- Helps in speech and pronunciation.
