Definite, Indefinite, and Zero Articles
- "A" is for any.
- "The" is for that one.
- No article is for everything or nothing.
Indefinite Article: "A" vs. "An"
- Use "a" before consonant sounds (a dog, a hotel, a university).
- Use "an" before vowel sounds (an apple, an hour, an MBA).
- "University" takes "a" because the "u" sounds like "you".
Definite Article: "The"
- Use "the" when the noun is already known to the listener.
- Use "the" when the noun is unique or specific.
- Use "the" when the noun is described or limited by an adjective or phrase.
- Use "the" for unique things (the sun, the internet, the Pope).
- Use "the" for specific items (The bird was blue).
