Study Notes

Deciduous Teeth

  • Deciduous teeth erupt in the following order:
    • Upper teeth: 7, 8, 18, 14, 24 months
    • Lower teeth: 6, 7, 16, 12, 20 months

Primary First Molar (Upper and Lower D)

  • Maxillary first molar:
    • Has a predecessor (4) that is different from the 6
    • Can have two types: four-cusp or three-cusp
    • Four-cusp type: two buccal and two lingual cusps
    • Three-cusp type: two buccal and one lingual cusp
  • Geometric outline: trapezoid
  • Buccal aspect:
    • Very smooth surface with little evidence of developmental groove
    • Occlusal surface is scalloped with no definite cusp ridge form
    • Large MB cusp and small DB cusp
    • Prominent cervical ridge with more prominence on the mesial half
  • Roots:
    • Three roots (MB, DB, and L) are thin and widely spread
    • No root trunk
    • Furcation is close to the cervical line
    • Distal root is shorter than the mesial root

Primary Maxillary Second Molar

  • Resembles the permanent maxillary first molar
  • Larger than the deciduous maxillary first molar
  • Roots are noticeably shorter
  • General differences between the permanent and deciduous posterior teeth:
    • Size
    • Color
    • Bulbous crown
    • Prominent cervical ridge
    • Thin and divergent roots
    • Absence of root trunk

Mandibular First Molar

  • Does not resemble any other deciduous or permanent teeth
  • Primitive appearance
  • Buccal aspect:
    • Trapezoid outline
    • Mesial contour of the crown is nearly straight
    • Distal side is convex and converges toward the cervix
    • MB cusp is much wider than DB cusp
    • No groove between them
  • Roots:
    • Long, slender, and widely spread
    • No root trunk
    • Furcation is close to the cervical line

Primary Mandibular Second Molar

  • Larger than the first molar
  • Smaller than the permanent mandibular first molar
  • Resembles the permanent mandibular first molar
  • General differences between the deciduous and permanent teeth:
    • Size
    • Color
    • Bulbous crown
    • Prominent cervical ridge
    • Thin and divergent roots
    • Absence of root trunk
  • However, there are differences between the deciduous and permanent mandibular first molars:
    • Number of cusps and roots
    • Elevations and depressions
    • Geometric outline of occlusal surface
