Definition

• Dental anatomy is the study of the structure and morphology of teeth and their surrounding tissues.

Tooth Structure

• Enamel: hardest substance in the human body, covering the crown of the tooth
• Dentin: layer beneath the enamel, making up the majority of the tooth
• Cementum: thin layer of bone-like tissue covering the root of the tooth
• Pulp: soft tissue inside the tooth, containing nerves and blood vessels
• Dentin-pulp complex: interaction between dentin and pulp, influencing tooth sensitivity and pain

Tooth Morphology

• Incisors: chisel-shaped teeth for cutting and biting food
• Canines: pointed teeth for piercing and tearing food
• Premolars: teeth for crushing and tearing food
• Molars: flat teeth for grinding and crushing food

Tooth Numbering Systems

• Universal Numbering System: assigns a unique number to each tooth (1-32)
• Palmer Notation System: uses letters and numbers to identify teeth (e.g., UR8 for upper right 8th tooth)

Tooth Development

• Odontogenesis: process of tooth formation, involving ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm
