Study Notes
Sampling Methodology
- A random selection of cities and municipalities was taken in each region, with 10 cities/municipalities selected per region using probability proportional to population size (PPS).
- Barangays (Philippines' smallest political unit) were classified as urban or rural using Philippines Statistics Authority guidelines.
- Three barangays were selected in proportion to population size for each selected municipality or city.
- Interval sampling was used to select eight sample households.
Household Selection
- In the National Capital Region, a starting street corner was selected at random and every tenth household was sampled.
- In other regions, a random corner was selected and every fourth household was sampled.
Response Rate
- The total response rate was 42.5%, calculated by multiplying the contact rate, cooperation rate, and survey completion rate.
Survey Instrument
- Household-level data were collected using a survey instrument designed through an iterative process with disaster experts from academia, government, and NGOs in the Philippines.
- The survey instrument was translated from English into five languages (Tagalog, Ilocano, Bicolano, Ilonggo, and Cebuano) and back-translated into English.
Survey Administration
- The survey was conducted by 165 trained interviewers using a digital data collection tool, with face-to-face interviews with adult household members.
- Supervisors monitored the study full-time, observing live interviews and conducting surprise checks on the research team.
Survey Limitations
- The survey had a 42.5% response rate, relatively high compared to social sciences standards, but took approximately 1.5 hours to complete, leading to respondent fatigue.
- The response rate may have been affected by the survey's length, with some respondents refusing or dropping out due to its duration.
