Inherited Metabolic Disorders

• Cystic Fibrosis is the commonest serious inherited metabolic disorder in the UK.

Cystic Fibrosis

• The abnormal gene associated with Cystic Fibrosis is located on chromosome 7.
• Cystic Fibrosis is NOT characterized by tumors in the pleura, as it is a disease affecting the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive systems.

Pleural Tumors

• Secondary pleural tumors are more common than primary pleural tumors.
• Secondary pleural tumors appear as multiple, small, and nodular lesions on the lung surface.

Clinical Manifestations of Cystic Fibrosis

• Cystic Fibrosis has various clinical manifestations, EXCEPT for tumors in the pleura.

Metastasis to the Pleura

• Malignant tumors that most frequently metastasize to the pleura are adenocarcinomas.

Mesothelioma

• The most common cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos.
• A mesothelioma tumor on the pleural surfaces typically appears as a diffuse, thick, and nodular lesion.
• Mesothelioma is NOT characterized by diarrhea, as it is a neoplasm that affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart.
