Sir C.V. Raman: A Biographical Overview
-
Early Life and Education: Born in Tiruchirapalli, Madras Presidency (present-day Tamil Nadu) in 1888, Raman displayed exceptional academic ability, completing secondary and higher secondary education exceptionally early. He secured top honours in Physics from the University of Madras at age 16. His first research paper, on light diffraction, was published in 1906.
-
Career and Research: Initially joined the Indian Finance Service but his passion for physics led him to the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS) where he focused on acoustics and optics. In 1917, he became the first Palit Professor of Physics at the Rajabazar Science College in Calcutta. A significant professional catalyst was his trip to Europe, where observation of the Mediterranean Sea challenged the prevailing explanation of ocean blue colour. This led to pivotal research.
-
Raman Effect Discovery: On February 28, 1928, Raman and his student, K.S. Krishnan, discovered the Raman effect, a phenomenon of light scattering where light changes wavelength and frequency after passing through a transparent material. This discovery led him to subsequently receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
-
Further Contributions and Recognition: Raman founded the Indian Journal of Physics in 1926, became the first Indian director of the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore in 1933, and established the Indian Academy of Sciences in the same year. He established the Raman Research Institute in 1948, continuing his influential work. His contributions were recognised when he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award in 1954.
Nobel Prize and National Science Day
-
Nobel Prize: Sir C.V. Raman became the first Asian to receive a Nobel Prize in any scientific field, awarded for his discovery of the Raman effect.
-
National Science Day: The Government of India annually celebrates February 28th as National Science Day to commemorate the discovery of the Raman effect.
