Study Notes

CT Scan Overview

  • CT Scan is used for diagnostics
  • Uses radiation to take X-Rays (slices) of the body
  • Takes slices and turns them into 3D images

History

  • Alessandro Vallebona (Italy) had the idea of taking slices of the body for imaging (Tomography) in the early 1900's
  • First CT Scan performed in 1971
  • CT Scanners installed in 1974
  • Godfrey Hounsfield (Britain) and Allan Comrack (South Africa) credited as inventors of the CT scan

State of the Art

  • Widely prevalent and increased use over the past 20 years
  • Unnecessary CT Scans have become a concern
  • 3D imaging and better clarity compared to traditional imaging methods

CT Scan vs MRI

  • CT Scans are usually cheaper
  • Typically better at showing bones than MRI
  • Less effective at showing soft tissue
  • Takes around 5 minutes, while MRI takes around 30 minutes
  • Can be harmful to the patient, unlike MRI which has no known biohazards
  • Both used for detecting cancer

Limitations

  • Higher radiation exposure needed for better clarity
  • Human error in reading scans
  • Not very good at depicting soft tissue
  • Requires moving the patient to change the image plane, unlike MRI
