Crime Scene Investigation and Evidence Collection
- Deputies must collect physical evidence if a Crime Scene detective is not available.

Victim Support and Transportation
- Deputies should arrange for victims to be transported to the Sexual Assault Treatment Center (SATC) for examination.
- Victims may be accompanied by a relative or close friend, but not during the interview.
- Deputies must advise victims that their clothing may be taken as evidence and bring a change of clothing.
Sexual Assault Treatment Center
- The SATC operates 24/7 and provides free physical examinations and medical services to victims of sexual battery.
- Deputies will inform victims of the purpose of submitting evidence for testing and transport them to the SATC.
- Deputies may transport a relative or close friend with the victim if needed.
- Deputies will notify Communications with their mileage and provide time and location checks for deputies in transit to and from the center.
Victim Refusal and Alternative Options

Investigation and Reporting
- Deputies will ensure all elements of the reported offense are included in the Event Report.
- Event Reports should include documentation of verbal or written statements, witness information, and other relevant details.
- The Special Victims Unit (SVU) supervisor will be immediately notified of all sexual battery incidents or other sex-related offenses where an arrest is made.
Juvenile Victims
- Deputies will try to notify the parent or guardian of juvenile victims.
- If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, a duty judge will be contacted for a court order authorizing a medical examination and/or treatment.
- Deputies will contact the Department of Children and Families (DCF) on cases involving juvenile on juvenile sex offenses or allegations of juvenile abuse.
Confidentiality and Disclosure
- Information that can be used to identify the victim (e.g., name, date of birth, address, occupation, and place of employment) will remain confidential in accordance with Florida law.
- These Standard Operating Procedures are considered law enforcement sensitive and contain exempt information under Florida Public Records Law.
