Flashcards
Maintain Oxygenation
Maintain Oxygenation
The first step in managing a crash airway is to ensure the patient is receiving adequate oxygen. If the patient is well oxygenated, you can proceed to the next step.
Intubation Attempt Successful?
Intubation Attempt Successful?
If the initial intubation attempt is successful, the airway is secured, and you can proceed to post-intubation management. If unsuccessful, you move on to the next step.
Unable to Bag Ventilate?
Unable to Bag Ventilate?
If the patient cannot be effectively bagged, you must administer succinylcholine to paralyze the muscles and facilitate intubation. If bagging is successful, return to the intubation attempt.

Study Notes
Crash Airway Algorithm
- Initial Step: Maintain oxygenation
- Intubation Attempt:
- If successful, proceed to post-intubation management
- If unsuccessful, proceed to next step
- If unable to bag ventilate:
- Administer succinylcholine (2 mg/kg IVP).
- Attempt Intubation:
- If successful, proceed to post-intubation management
- If unsuccessful, check for failure to maintain oxygenation
- Failure to Maintain Oxygenation:
- If yes, proceed to failed airway
- If no and ≥3 attempts by experienced operator, proceed to failed airway
- If no and <3 operator attempts, proceed to post-intubation management
- Post-intubation management: Management following successful intubation.
- Failed airway: Indicates that the airway could not be secured despite attempts.
