What is the cranium?
What is the cranium?
The bony structure of the head of vertebrates, encasing the brain.
Cranial Bones
Cranial Bones
The 8 bones that comprise the cranium which are the Sphenoid (1), Temporal (2), Ethmoid (1), Parietal (2), Occipital (1), Frontal (1).
Frontal Bone
Frontal Bone
A flat bone that forms the anterior part of the cranium, providing structure to the skull, eye orbits, and upper face; protects the frontal lobe of the brain; aids in facial expressions.

Study Notes
The Cranium
- The cranium consists of 8 bones.
8 Bones of the Cranium
- Sphenoid: There is 1 sphenoid bone.
- Temporal: There are 2 temporal bones.
- Ethmoid: There is 1 ethmoid bone.
- Parietal: There are 2 parietal bones.
- Occipital: There is 1 occipital bone.
- Frontal: There is 1 frontal bone.
Frontal Bone
- Type: Flat bone
- Parts: Squamous, orbital, and nasal.
- Location: Situated at the front of the cranium.
- Articulates with: Parietal bones, Ethmoid bone, lacrimal bones, Maxillae, Nasal bones, Zygomatic bones, and Sphenoid bone.
- Blood Supply: Middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Provides structure to the skull, eye orbits, and the upper face.
- Protects the frontal lobe of the brain.
- Aids in facial expressions (muscles attachment point).
Parietal Bones
- Type: Flat bones.
- Parts: Frontal, occipital, sphenoidal, and mastoid angles.
- Location: Articulates with the frontal bone, occipital bone, temporal bone, and sphenoid bone.
- Blood Supply: Middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Provide structure.
- Protect the brain.
Occipital Bone
- Type: Flat bone.
- Parts: Squamous, basilar, and lateral.
- Location: The occipital bone articulates with parietal bones, temporal bones, sphenoid bone, and the atlas.
- Blood Supply: Middle meningeal artery.
- Functions:
- Provides structure to the skull.
- Provides attachment for muscles.
- Forms the foramen magnum.
Temporal Bones
- Type: Irregular bones.
- Parts: Squamous, petrous, tympanic, mastoid, and styloid.
- Location: This bone articulates with the parietal bone, occipital bone, and zygomatic bone.
- Blood Supply: Middle meningeal artery, posterior auricular artery, and stylomastoid artery.
- Functions:
- Provides structure to the skull which protects the brain.
- The styloid process is an anchor point for muscles associated with the tongue and larynx.
- Contains the middle and internal part of the ear.
