Flashcards
Cribriform plate
Cribriform plate
The foramen in the anterior cranial fossa that transmits the Olfactory nerve (CN I).
Optic Canal
Optic Canal
The foramen that carries the Optic nerve (CN II) and Ophthalmic artery.
Superior Orbital Fissure
Superior Orbital Fissure
The fissure that transmits the Oculomotor nerve (CN III), Trochlear nerve (CN IV), Ophthalmic branch of the Trigeminal nerve (CN V₁), and Abducent nerve (CN VI).

Study Notes
- Cranial fossae are depressions in the base of the skull that support the brain.
Anterior Cranial Fossa
- Cribriform plate allows passage of CN I (Olfactory nerve).
Middle Cranial Fossa
- Optic canal transmits CN 2 (Optic nerve) and the ophthalmic artery.
- Superior orbital fissure allows passage of CN 3 (Oculomotor nerve), CN 4 (Trochlear nerve), CN 51 (Trigeminal Nerve - Ophthalmic Branch), and CN 6 (Abducent nerve).
- Foramen Rotundum allows of CN 52 (Trigeminal Nerve - Maxillary Branch).
- Foramen Ovale allows passage of CN 53 (Trigeminal Nerve - Mandibular Branch).
- Foramen Spinosum allows passage of the Middle Meningeal Artery.
Posterior Cranial Fossa
- Internal Auditory Meatus transmits CN 7 (Facial nerve) and CN 8 (Vestibulocochlear nerve).
- Jugular Foramen allows passage of CN 9 (Glossopharyngeal nerve), CN 10 (Vagus nerve), and CN 11 (Accessory nerve) along with the Jugular vein.
- Hypoglossal Canal allows passage of CN XII (Hypoglossal nerve).
- Foramen Magnum transmits the Brainstem, spinal root of CN XI (Accessory nerve), and vertebral arteries.
