Study Notes
Bag-Mask Device Usage
- Position directly above the victim's head.
- Place the mask using the bridge of the nose as a guide.
- Use the E-C clamp technique to secure the mask and open the airway.
- Deliver breaths by squeezing the bag (1 second per breath), observing for chest rise.
Delivering Breaths with a Bag-Mask Device
- Administer 1 breath over 1 second while watching for effective chest rise.
Importance of an AED
- Sudden cardiac arrest often stems from arrhythmias.
- Life-threatening arrhythmias include pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT) and ventricular fibrillation (VF).
- Blood flow to the brain halts abruptly, leading to loss of consciousness.
- Early intervention is critical to restore normal heart rhythm and pulse; death may follow swiftly without it.
AED Functionality
- An AED analyzes heart rhythm and can deliver a shock when necessary.
Actions After AED Shock Delivery
- Immediately resume CPR, starting with chest compressions.
Steps for Using an AED
- Power on the AED and follow voice prompts.
- For victims aged 8 and older, use adult pads, attaching them to the bare chest.
- Clear the victim during heart rhythm analysis; no one should be touching the victim.
- If a shock is indicated, clear the area and deliver the shock.
- After a shock, promptly return to CPR. If no shock is indicated, start CPR immediately.
AED Pad Placement
- Anterolateral placement: one pad below the right collarbone, the other beside the left nipple.
- Anteroposterior placement: one pad on the left chest, below the nipple line; the other on the left side of the back beneath the shoulder blade.
Minimizing Interruptions in CPR with AED
- Maintain high-quality CPR until the AED indicates to clear.
- If a shock is not advised, or after delivering a shock, resume CPR continuously.
- When multiple rescuers are present, one should perform compressions while the other prepares the AED.
Scene Safety and Initial Assessment
- Verify the scene is safe as the first step for BLS.
- Check victim responsiveness by tapping and shouting.
- If unresponsive, call for help and retrieve an AED if alone.
- Check for normal breathing and pulse simultaneously within 10 seconds.
- If normal breathing and pulse present, monitor until help arrives.
- If no normal breathing but pulse is felt, provide rescue breaths (1 breath every 6 seconds).
- If no pulse, begin CPR immediately.
- In cases of opioid overdose, administer naloxone if available.
- For no breathing and no pulse, perform CPR cycles and use the AED as soon as it arrives.
