Study Notes
Corticospinal Tract Overview
- Most fibres cross to the opposite side at the junction of the brainstem and spinal cord known as the pyramidal decussation.
- The corticospinal tract fibers originate mainly from the primary motor cortex, as well as the premotor and supplementary motor areas.
- Majority of the corticospinal tract fibres descend as the lateral corticospinal tract, which is located in the lateral part of the spinal cord.
- The pyramidal tract is also referred to as the corticospinal tract.
Course of Fibres
- Corticospinal fibres travel through the internal capsule, descend through the brainstem, and ultimately reach the spinal cord.
- Some fibres of the lateral corticospinal tract arise from the primary motor cortex and might also receive contributions from the parietal lobe.
- Fibres that descend in the anterior white column of the spinal cord are primarily part of the anterior corticospinal tract.
Additional Information
- Corticonuclear fibres are also known as cortico-bulbar fibres, which mainly innervate cranial nerve motor nuclei.
