Personnel Accountability

  • The first arriving unit should provide dispatch with the number of personnel on scene, their location, and the status of the incident.

Incident Commander (IC) Responsibilities

  • The IC should ensure that a personnel accountability system is established and maintained throughout the incident.
  • The IC is responsible for ensuring that all personnel are accounted for during the incident.

Apparatus Requirements

  • Apparatus without an electronic or global positioning system-based locator should have a map or GPS device to aid in tracking their location.

Accountability Officer

  • An accountability officer should be assigned as soon as possible, ideally at the initial dispatch or upon arrival of the first unit.

Company Officer Responsibilities

  • The Company Officer is responsible for maintaining the personnel accountability system, including ensuring that all personnel are checked in and out.

Firefighter Responsibilities

  • Firefighters should check in and out with their Company Officer to ensure the personnel accountability system is properly maintained.
