7 Questions
What happens to the mass of the impure copper anodes during the electrolysis process?
They gradually diminish to about 10% of their original mass
What is the main purpose of electroplating?
To protect objects against corrosion and make them more attractive
What is the typical weight range of the cathodes after the electrolysis process is completed?
100-120 kilograms
True or false: Hematite is crushed with limestone and coke to create the charge in the iron ore smelting process.
True
What is the purpose of silver plating in electroplating?
To provide a shiny, attractive finish and prevent corrosion
True or false: The temperature at the bottom of the furnace during iron ore smelting is 14000C.
False
True or false: Carbon monoxide is used to reduce iron ore in the smelting process.
True
Study Notes
Iron Ore Production
- Iron ore is also known as hematite
- Hematite is crushed with limestone and coke to form a mixture called the charge
Blast Furnace Conditions
- The temperature at the bottom of the blast furnace is 1400°C
- The temperature at the top of the furnace is 400°C
Chemical Reactions in the Blast Furnace
- Coke burns in the blast to produce carbon dioxide: C + O2 → CO2
- Limestone decomposes into calcium oxide and carbon dioxide: CaCO3 → CaO + CO2
- Carbon dioxide reacts with more coke to produce carbon monoxide: CO2 + C → 2CO
- Iron ore is reduced by carbon monoxide to produce iron: Fe2O3 + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO2
