Study Notes
Coordinate Plane
- There are four quadrants on a coordinate plane: I, II, III, and IV
- Points on the x-axis have a y-coordinate of 0
- Points on the y-axis have an x-coordinate of 0
- The origin is the point (0,0)
- The point (2, -1) is two units to the right of the origin and one unit below the x-axis
- The point (-4, 32) is four units to the left of the origin and 32 units above the x-axis
Reflecting Points
- When a figure is reflected over the y-axis, the y-values stay the same, while the x-values change signs
- The reflection of point (-8, 5) across the y-axis is (8, 5)
Locating Rational Number Ordered Pairs
- The midpoint of a line segment is found by averaging the x-coordinates and averaging the y-coordinates of the endpoints
- The midpoint of segment BC is (-1, -4)
- The midpoint of segment AB is (2, 1/2)
