Control of Adrenal Steroid Hormones Secretion
- Physiological control of adrenal steroid hormones secretion, especially glucocorticoids (cortisol), occurs through the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
- The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis involves the production of hypothalamic corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which stimulates the release of ACTH from the anterior pituitary gland.
- ACTH stimulates the release of adrenal steroid hormones, mainly glucocorticoids (cortisol) and androgens.
- Mineralocorticoids secretion is controlled mainly by the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and to a lesser extent by the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
Negative Feedback
- Increased free cortisol levels cause negative feedback inhibition to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis through suppression of CRH.
- Negative feedback mechanism involves the inhibition of CRH production in the hypothalamus, which in turn reduces ACTH release from the pituitary gland.
