Pambansang Alagad ng Sining ng Pilipinas (National Artist of the Philippines)

• Highest recognition by the Philippine government to a person of the arts
• Created through Presidential Proclamation No. 1001, series 1972
  • Meant to give recognition and respect to citizens for outstanding contribution to Philippine arts
• Recipients of award represent the Philippines' highest ideals in humanities and the arts
• Covers architecture & allied arts, dance, film, broadcast arts, literature, music, theater, and visual arts
• According to the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) rules, the award is every three years
  • Circumstances may result in award given the following year or not at all
• The President of the Philippines bestows the award upon the recommendation of the NCCA and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP)
• A set of awardees was conferred in 2018

Criteria

• An announcement will be made by the NCCA and the CCP as the Order of the National Artists Award Secretariats, for the opening of nominations
• Nominees must have the following qualifications:
  • Artist must be a Filipino citizen at the time of nomination
  • A deceased artist can be nominated, as long as they were Filipino prior to death
• An artist should have contributed "to building a Filipino sense of nationhood" through their works
• The artist should have led the way with new and creative expressions or styles, and influencing other artists
• The artist's work should be noteworthy, embodiment of excellence, enriching their chosen field
• Critically acclaimed and accepted by legitimate institutions and peers

Other Benefits National Artists Receive

• Title and rank of a National Artist
• Medal bearing the insignia of National Artist and a citation
• Cash gift of PHP100,000.00 to the living artist and PHP75,000.00 for those recognized after death (given to heir)
