Study Notes
Contact Forces
- Contact forces act between objects that are in physical touch.
- Examples include:
- Reaction force: An object at rest on a surface experiences a reaction force in the opposite direction to an action force. (e.g., a book on a table)
- Tension force: Objects stretched by a force like a cable experience tension force at each end. (e.g., a ceiling lamp)
- Friction force: Objects sliding past each other experience friction. (e.g., a box sliding down a slope)
- Air resistance: Objects moving through the air experience air resistance. (e.g., a skydiver)
- Newton's Third Law of Motion applies: For every action force, there is an equal and opposite reaction force. Both objects experience the same force size but in opposite directions.
Non-Contact Forces
- Non-contact forces act between objects that are not touching.
- Examples:
- Magnetic force: Magnetic materials experience a force in a magnetic field. Opposite poles attract, like poles repel.
- Electrostatic force: Charged particles experience a force in an electric field. Opposite charges attract, like charges repel.
- Gravitational force: Any mass in a gravitational field experiences a force. Masses are attracted to each other.
