Consumer Studies - Grade 12 - Clothing - Set 1
- Fashion is a general social phenomenon that shapes individuals across all aspects of life, including housing, food, communication, work, leisure, and governance.
- Fashion is a code of status, understood by those within a group but often only guessed at by outsiders.
- Change is inherent in fashion, driving its continuous evolution.
- While fashion typically changes, some garments remain constant over time.
- Fashion is a form of self-expression, conveying a message about the person wearing it.
- Fashion continually changes, influenced by economic, social, political and technological factors (detailed in separate sections).

The Fashion Cycle
- Fashion trends typically progress in a cyclical manner, encompassing five distinct stages: introduction, where new ideas emerge; rise, where popularity begins to grow; peak, which is the height of trend acceptance; decline, signifying a drop in interest; and finally, obsolescence, where the trend becomes outdated and is replaced by newer styles.
- Trends can be introduced in three main ways: by top designers (trickle-down theory), celebrities (trickle-across theory), or popularized by younger groups (trickle-up theory).
- Consumers don't readily adopt a fashion if the timing is not right.
- Fashion changes often occur as a response to evolving consumer needs.
Fashion Terminology
- Silhouette: The outline or shape of a garment, which can be used to alter a person’s appearance.
- Style: Specific characteristics of a type of garment that distinguish it from others (e.g., neckline).
- Classics: Timeless styles that are considered tasteful, are adaptable, popular, and suitable for most people.
Fads
- Fads are styles that are quickly popular and just as quickly disappear.
- They are characterized by flashiness and are often easily available, unlike more substantial fashion trends.
Haute Couture
- Haute couture is a high fashion design style that creates unique, expensive, exclusive garments.
- The garments are not mass produced.
- Styles initially shown in haute couture may later become copied and produced as mass-fashion.
Mass Fashion
- Mass fashion involves large-scale production of garments using cheaper materials and techniques to make items accessible to the mass market.
Brand Labels
- Branding increases the visibility and desirability of branded items.
- Brands are used to communicate quality, differentiate products from competitors, and convey a status or image.
- The use of brand labels in fashion is often very significant for teenagers, linking with their social circles and perceptions.
