Study Notes

Stairway Regulations

  • Stairways must be installed at an incline of 30 to 50 degrees from the horizontal.
  • Riser heights and tread depths in stairways must not vary by more than 1/4 inch.
  • Stairway landings must be at least 30 inches deep and 22 inches wide for vertical rises of 12 feet or less.

Handrail Requirements

  • Handrails and top rails must withstand a force of 200 pounds; designs must avoid dangerous projections.
  • Handrail heights should be between 30 inches and 37 inches from the tread surface.
  • Stair rail systems installed after March 15, 1991, require heights of 36 to 37 inches; older systems may have heights ranging from 30 to 34 inches.
  • Clearance for temporary handrails must be at least three inches from walls.

Ladder Specifications

  • Rung spacing should be between 10 to 14 inches, with uniformly spaced cleats and steps.
  • Double-cleated ladders are mandatory when ladders are the only access point for 25 or more workers, also for two-way traffic.
  • Fixed ladders must support two loads of at least 250 pounds.
  • Portable ladders need to extend at least 3 feet above upper landing surfaces.

Load Capacity and Performance

  • Warning labels on ladders must be positioned on the outside face of one side rail.
  • Portable ladders must withstand four times their maximum designated load, which is at least 200 pounds.
  • Each non-self-supporting ladder should support four times the maximum intended load at a 75 1/2 degree angle.
  • For scaffolds and ladders in elevator shafts, rungs must be spaced no less than 6 inches and no more than 16.5 inches apart along the side rails.

Usage Guidelines

  • Ladders with an angle exceeding 90 degrees from the horizontal are prohibited, with exceptions for fixed ladders in conical manhole sections.
  • Non-self-supporting ladders should be positioned so that the horizontal distance from the top support to the foot is about one-fourth of the working length.
  • If a ladder does not extend at least three feet above an upper landing, it must be secured at the top and equipped with a grasping device for safety.
  • Ladder steps and rungs must be level and uniformly spaced for operational safety.
